A small sub-specialty, done properly
Andrology is the branch of urology dealing with male reproductive and sexual health, and with reconstruction of the genitourinary tract. It is a small sub-specialty, and most general urologists see only a handful of these conditions in a year. That matters, because several of these problems are managed badly by default — a urethral stricture stretched repeatedly rather than reconstructed, a low sperm count sent straight to IVF without anyone establishing the cause, an erection problem treated with tablets alone when the underlying issue is hormonal or vascular.
You do not need to have exhausted every other avenue before asking for a specialist view. It is worth seeking one if any of the following apply:
- You have been told an operation is your only option, and nobody has explained why
- A previous procedure has not worked, or the problem has come back
- You have had the same treatment repeatedly without a plan for stopping the cycle
- You have been given a diagnosis without being examined
- You are being asked to accept a symptom as permanent without being told what causes it
- The condition is affecting your relationship, your work or your mood, and nobody has acknowledged that

Majed Shabbir is one of the UK's leading andrology consultants. He is a past National Chair of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Andrology & Genito-urethral Reconstruction section, and the past Clinical Lead of Urology at Guy's Hospital. Under his leadership, Guy's Urology became the leading urology unit in Europe, as listed in the World's Best Specialised Hospitals for Urology (Newsweek 2025).
At Guy's he set up the largest male infertility service from south of the Thames to the south coast, specialising in microsurgery and onco-fertility. He has trained a generation of surgeons since his appointment at Guy's in 2012, and has been one of the longest-running tutors for andrology and male infertility on the BAUS FRCS(Urol) course, as well as a tutor for the British Fertility Society and the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists.
Maj teaches and trains surgeons internationally, has been an invited guest speaker around the world and has performed live surgery workshops. He is co-lead of the AGOUR course, one of the largest andrology and infertility courses in the world, with over 4,000 registrations in 2024. He is an Associate Professor in Andrology & Infertility at King's College London.

Complex genito-urethral reconstruction
Majed specialises in surgical andrology and genito-urethral reconstruction, and set up and runs one of the country's largest tertiary referral andrology practices at Guy's Hospital. He received a UK National Clinical Impact Award for this work in 2022.
Men's health & prosthetic surgery
Director and Clinical Lead for the Andrology Prosthesis Centre at Guy's Hospital — a supra-regional network for prosthetic surgery spanning Guy's, King's College Hospital, Imperial College and Oxford. He is also the Director & Lead Clinician of The Andrology Centre, London.
Prostate cancer survivorship
Co-founder, with consultant urologist Arun Sahai, of the Guy's Hospital Post Prostatectomy Service, developed in 2019 to redefine care after prostate cancer surgery. The service has won nine awards, including a GSTT Care Award (2023) and the UK Business Awards for Best Clinical Management System (2023).
Male infertility
Set up the largest male infertility service south of the Thames to the south coast in 2012. Runs a national training fellowship in male infertility surgery and, with Julia Kopeika, one of the few joint fertility clinics in the Guy's Assisted Conception Unit for complex cases. He was the lead for male fertility on the UK NICE national practice guidelines for fertility problems (2026).
Sickle cell and men's health
Established the joint sickle cell urology clinic at Guy's in 2013 with consultant haematologist Rachel Kesse-Adu, now expanded to King's College Hospital and the Evelina. Their sickle cell priapism education film won three awards at the 77th Association of Medical Illustrators Conference in 2023 and is hosted by BAUS and the Sickle Cell Society UK.
Urethral reconstruction
Set up and leads the Southeast London Urethral Reconstruction Team at Guy's. With consultant colleague Raj Nair, a world leading expert in robotic surgery, the team also offers buccal graft reconstruction of bladder neck, ureteric and PUJ strictures — the largest experience of this type of robotic reconstruction in the UK.

Do I need a GP referral?
Not always. Many patients self-refer for a private consultation. However, most insurers require a GP or specialist referral letter before they will authorise your appointment, so it is worth checking with your insurer first. If you are self-funding, you can book directly.
Which insurers are accepted?
All major UK and international private medical insurers are accepted. Please bring your policy number and pre-authorisation code to your first appointment. See fees and insurance for details.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Any referral letter, previous test results (semen analyses, blood tests, ultrasound or MRI reports), a list of your current medications, and your insurance details. If you have had previous surgery, an operation note is extremely useful.
Do you offer video and telephone consultations?
Yes. Video and telephone consultations are available and are often appropriate for reviewing results, second opinions and follow-up. A physical examination will usually be needed before surgery is planned.
Do you see patients from outside London or overseas?
Yes. A significant proportion of referrals come from elsewhere in the UK and from abroad, particularly for microsurgery, complex reconstruction and redo procedures. Consultations can often be arranged remotely first so that travel is only needed for surgery.
Can I get a second opinion?
Yes, and it is a common reason for referral — particularly where surgery has been recommended elsewhere, or where a previous procedure has not given the result you expected.
